The book

An atlas of 101 dinosaurs, drawn in light

Glowing Dinosaurs: An Atlas of Glowing Ancient Forms is a large art and science book. Every dinosaur, from the first small hunters of the Triassic to Tyrannosaurus at the end of the Cretaceous, has its own spread: on the left its facts, field notes and six signs, on the right a full glowing plate of bone and muscle on black.

  • 101dinosaurs
  • 303glowing plates
  • 24 × 30cm hardcover
  • 46scientific sources

Every fact is traced to a published source, listed at the back of the book. It is a book to keep on the table, to read aloud and to return to.

The exhibition

From one gallery wall to a whole city

From the pages of the book grows a touring exhibition, made by a team whose exhibitions have been seen by more than twelve million visitors. It comes at four scales, chosen to fit the venue: a single wall of signed works, a room, a full hall, or dinosaurs glowing across the buildings of a city.

  • 4scales
  • 8glowing animatronics
  • 60–100cm works on wood or acrylic
  • UVlight, glowing in the dark

Eight fluorescent animatronic dinosaurs move and glow under ultraviolet light. For museums, science centres, galleries, festivals and cities.

The trailer

Glowing Dinosaurs in fifty seconds

With sound: a jungle, a storm, and the dinosaurs of the book. Made from the book’s own plates and pages.

Read a description of the trailer

Fifty seconds, with music and jungle sounds and no spoken words. On a black screen, golden three-toed footprints walk across the frame: “They ruled the Earth for more than 150 million years.” A Tyrannosaurus rises out of the dark as grey stone: “All we have left is stone.” With a roar, light spreads through its bones from the heart outward until it glows in cyan and pink: “This book turns the stone back into light.”

The book appears, the cover turning into view, with “The new atlas, volume IV of the Glowing Series, by Firoiu Dan Nicolae, 101 luminous portraits, 303 glowing plates.” Four glowing dinosaurs sweep through a jungle of ferns, each with its name, nickname and one fact: Velociraptor, the Feathered Thief; Triceratops, the Horned Shield; Spinosaurus, the River Monster; Stegosaurus, the Plated Giant.

A golden timeline climbs from 252 to 66 million years ago, and Eoraptor, Brachiosaurus, Deinonychus, Spinosaurus and Tyrannosaurus appear at their ages. Spreads of the book slide past. The numbers 101 dinosaurs, 303 glowing plates and 46 scientific papers count up. The author, Firoiu Dan Nicolae, artist, producer and curator, whose exhibitions have been seen by more than 12 million visitors. “The book. The exhibition. Eight glowing animatronics.” The trailer ends on the cover: “Reserve your copy”, dan@cocoagency.bg.
