Eight glowing animatronics

They move, and they glow under ultraviolet light.

See them glow

Under ultraviolet light

The plates step off the wall.

Alongside the works, the exhibition can bring eight fluorescent animatronic dinosaurs, built to glow under ultraviolet light. In a dark room they light up like the pages of the book, and they move.

They fit a hall or a festival as the centrepiece of the dark room, beside the lightboxes and the great prints, or stand alone as a show of their own. They come from the same team that toured Dino Planet, Living Dragons and Living Dinosaurs.

More about the animatronics

The dinosaurs that move

A book can show a dinosaur glowing on a page. An exhibition can show it glowing on a wall. The animatronics go one step further: eight fluorescent animatronic dinosaurs, built to glow under ultraviolet light, that move in the dark in front of the visitor.

They are the bridge between the two worlds of their maker. Firoiu Dan Nicolae has spent more than ten years creating and touring dinosaur and creature exhibitions with Coco Agency, among them Dino Planet, Living Dragons and Giant Bugs, and he curated Living Dinosaurs. Those shows have been seen by more than twelve million visitors. The Glowing Series brought his art to the page; the fluorescent animatronics bring the page back to the scale and movement of those shows.

Lit like the plates

Under ordinary light, an animatronic is a model. Under ultraviolet light, a fluorescent skin seems to give off its own colour, and the animal appears to glow from within, in the same neon against black as the plates in the book. That is why they belong with Glowing Dinosaurs. A visitor who has just walked past the printed plates turns a corner into a darkened room and meets the same animals, glowing in the same way, but large, solid and moving.

Where they fit

The animatronics work at several scales. In a hall, they can be the centrepiece of the dark room at the end of the walk through deep time, beside the lightboxes and the great prints. At a festival, they can stand together as a night-time attraction of their own. In a museum or science centre, they can join an existing dinosaur gallery for a season, bringing light and colour to a familiar subject. And with the book on a reading table and on sale in the shop, every visitor can take the animals home.

What a venue needs

The effect depends on darkness. The room or tent needs to be dark enough for ultraviolet light to work, with power for the lights and the animatronics, and a route that lets visitors see each animal without crowding. These needs are confirmed for each venue, together with the space, the access for installation and the length of the run. The artist’s team, which has installed touring exhibitions for more than a decade, designs the layout and the lighting.

Ask for the details

This page does not yet show photographs of the eight animatronics or list the animals, their sizes and their movements. They are available on request, together with the conditions for hire and touring. Write to the artist’s agency and we will send pictures, the list of animals and a proposal for your space.

For galleries, museums, science centres, festivals and cities

Bring the age of dinosaurs to your visitors

A touring exhibition at four scales: one wall, a room of 100 to 200 m², a hall of 400 to 900 m², or buildings across a whole city, with eight glowing animatronic dinosaurs that move. Designed, built and hung by the artist’s team, who have toured exhibitions seen by more than 12 million visitors.

Where the animatronics can go

The eight glowing animatronics can tour with the full Glowing Dinosaurs exhibition or travel on their own. Indoors, they need a space that can be made dark; outdoors, they come alive after sunset at festivals, in parks and at night events. Because they bring their own ultraviolet lighting, a single room or a corner of a park is enough to turn an evening into a walk among glowing dinosaurs.
